Su primer empleo fue en empresa de montajes eléctricos, pero su vocación siempre fue el alpinismo. Ha participado en 40 expediciones al Himalaya, con 21 cimas conseguidas y el honor de ser el sexto montañero que ha coronado los 14 ochomiles de la Tierra.
En 2004 Oiarzabal sufrió los efectos de la congelación y la posterior amputación de ocho dedos de sus pies. Pese al hándicap físico, el vitoriano continúa con sus pasión.
Oiarzabal ha conseguido coronar en 17 ocasiones la cima de la montaña más alta del continente americano, el Aconcagua, en Argentina.

Juanito me encanta! tiene bastante mal humor pero bueno en realidad es buena persona y me parece que tiene muchas cualidades para poder ganar porque es todo un superviviente!

A toda la gente que con esa facilidad de palabra critican a Juanito, quiero decirles que cuando consigan todos los records que el ha conseguido durante su larga carrera como alpinista,entonces, podran situarse a su altura para poder criticarles. Juanito es uno de los pocos personajes españoles que han dado algo de gloria a este país así que se merece algo de respeto

No me extrañaría que lo de Rebeca fuese pagado. Para personas tan forradas como la gente con la que esta niña se relaciona eso es calderilla. Como gane ella no vuelvo a ver supervivientes, me esta decepcionando esta forma tan injusta de echar a la gente.

Juanito… que manía tienes de meterte con Nilo. Él nunca a quitado valor a tu trabajo, tú al de Nilo si.
Y que sepas que la ventaja de Nilo es su espiritu de sacrificio, su educación, su solidaridad… en definitiva, su manera de ser.
Nilo ha sido el mejor sólo porque pescara…ha sido el mejor por muchas otras cosas. Por sus ganas de trabajar, por sus grandes recursos, por su respeto a la naturaleza, por su respeto a todos, por no malmeter contra nadie….!! por muchas muchas cosas.
Por eso, aunque algunos de sus compañeros confundieron sus ganas de ayudar con prepotencia, el error ha sido subsanado por el público otorgándole el premio.
